As promised, this last instalment into the Knee-Hub background, is on pattelar groove, what your gait has to do with it, and why it matters.
But before I get going - did you have a chance to listen (and maybe even practice along?) to the last week's Pain Care Yoga class?
These recordings are usually only sent to class participants... buuut I was juggling one too many things on that particular Friday, and accidentally sent it to everyone. Sorry about that! I hope you enjoyed it or ignored it, depending on how busy your long weekend happened to be.
Now over to the now-famous patellar grove.
Here is a short yet vital anatomy bit:
The big muscles at the front of the thigh (called quadriceps; or quads, for short) pass over the knee and become a tendon - patella tendon - that attaches to the shin right below the knee. Embedded - literally sown into it - is the patella, also known as the knee cap.
In the ideal world, patella - the knee cap - rests in the patellar groove.
Patellar groove is a special area that has adapted over millennia to accommodate the knee cap as the knee bends and extends, and allows the knee cap to move up and down without rubbing on other bones.
The only problem is that many of us spend years and years walking with a particular gait pattern that stems from our super weak feet (can you lift and spread all of your toes? and now hold them up?) and underused hips (I won't even touch that Pandora's box right now).
This gait pattern rotates the shinbone out relative to the thigh, creating a pull on the knee cap that moves it out of its groove.
Once the knee cap has been pulled over to a side, it ends up sitting right over a bony surface without the genetically pre-programmed space built for friction-free movement.
That's when the bone - on - bone begin to happen, which means walking, standing and even sitting hurts. And once the nervous system kicks in its protective gears, it may even hurt ALL OF THE TIME.
Sound familiar?
Come on over to the Knee-Hub to learn what you can do to change that.
