Often, folk with chronic pain start their Satori yoga journey with these words:
"I just had an Xray.
My doctor said I have arthritis in my (knee - hip - spine - insert sore body part name here). Now I am waiting for an MRI."
And often, there's a sound of hopelessness in their voice.
Medical lingo can sound scary, and we tend to interpret the findings as a life sentence of the worst possible scenario. But is it really?
Here are some mind-bending discoveries from the field of pain science, kindly compiled by Dr. Darren Beals, PhD and Dr. Tim Mitchell, PhD:
- Only 10% of musculoskeletal injuries and pain have findings on scans that are relevant. That means that 90% do not, despite of the commonly held belief that MRI is an end all be all procedure.
- The way scans are reported and understood can have a significant negative effect on people. Words and phrases like "wear and tear", "degeneration", "narrowing", "trapped", "bulging" and "protrusion" in scan reports can be interpreted in a negative way by the doctors and patients alike. When this occurs it has been associated with worse outcomes.
- One study followed 600 people who had an early MRI on their injury versus 2400 that did not. Those who had early scans did worse than those who did not.
- Scans can result in unhelpful and sometimes unnecessary treatment protocols.
Add to that the fact that there's a 70% margin of error in the scans and their interpretation. That means that if you have a second MRI an hour later or with a different technician, your results might look completely different.
So if scans do not work, then what does?
The answer might surprise you!
