Up until the 16th century it was a common belief that people have pain due to "pain energies" stuck in their bodies. Various methods were used to eradicate these "pain energies".
Italian doctors, for example, used wooden bowls...
A wooden bowl would be placed on patient's head and hammered on until the "pain energies" were silenced - and the patient passed out.
One of my friends
called it, "A different take on anaesthesia".
Consider how something that we now see as awful and cruel felt natural and familiar, perhaps even safe, to people who practised it.
What if our so-called "modern" medicine has its own wooden bowl or two?
Will future generations see our current pain management practices just as inhumane as pounding on a wooden bowl placed onto someone's head?
Ever since it's inception
in the early 1960's, modern pain science has made remarkable gains in understanding and treating chronic pain.
Yet, somehow, this vital information just doesn't seem to trickle down to people who need it most - those living and struggling with pain.
Pain Literacy
matters because it gives us the power to choose what beliefs we subscribe to and what treatment methods we use. Pain Literacy matters because it gives us the insight to recognize outdated "wooden bowls" when we encounter them, and the freedom to kick them to the curb when it matters.
