Happy New Year!
I thought about writing a post that would focus on a more traditional January theme of setting new intentions and starting new routines for this week, but in the end decided against it. Instead, today's post circles back to exactly where we left off in December:
FASCIA!
a.k.a. connective tissue
To recap, fascia is our body's own cellophane-like wrapping.
It is the fibrous tissue that covers, separates or binds together our muscles, organs, and other soft structures.
Fascia is omnipresent.
It can be found literally everywhere in the body: under the
skin, around the bones, within the supporting matrix of the heart and lungs, and even in the soft lining of the blood vessels.
Fascia has many jobs in the body, and none of them are more important than transmitting movement.
A snag in a sweater or a pulled thread in your favourite throw can potentially ruin the whole thing - especially if you keep unknowingly tugging on it....
Same goes for the fascia.
Because of fascia's pervasiveness, a sticky spot in one area will inevitably have a body-wide impact. Put several sticky spots together, and they will change how our body handles movement, how freely the nerves slide and glide throughout our connective tissue, and how well our joints operate on a day to day basis. Sooner or later, the sticky limitations give rise to dysfunctional movement and
inefficient compensation patterns.
But it is not all gloom and doom.
Luckily, there are MANY things we can do to help ourselves, the first and the most important one is mobilizing the sticky connective tissue.
January means that regular yoga classes are back - and so are the best mobilization techniques modern movement science has to offer.
Join today and let's MOBILIZE together!
