Try this test to check the stress response of your nervous system:
- Have a timer ready.
- Find a comfortable sitting or lying down position.
- Take three normal nasal inhales and exhales.
- Take a full nasal inhale; start the timer and exhale as slowly as you can through the nose. Do not swallow.
- Stop the timer when your exhale is finished.
This test measures your body's tolerance to CO2.
CO2, or carbon dioxide, plays an important role in relaxation response.
If you scored less than 30 seconds on the timed exhale, your nervous system resiliency and ability to access relaxation response is compromised. More on CO2 in the weeks to come!
