Gut health
Q&A:
Q: I didn't get a chance to read through all the details about different probiotic strains. Is there a ready-made probiotic you personally recommend?
A: Absolutely! I use two probiotic formulations and like to mix them, since they offer completely different strains—variety is key for gut health. One is "Women's Advanced Health Probiotic" by Genuine Health, and the other is "Fortify Optima Digestive Balance Probiotic" by Nature's Way. I alternate between these each week.
But here's the gentle reminder: each person's gut is as unique as their fingerprint, so what works well for me might not be your perfect fit. If you're starting, the brands I suggest could be a solid launch point, but in the end, it's all about finding what works best for you.
Q: When do you take your probiotics?
A: I usually take mine at lunchtime. Most quality probiotics are designed to survive the journey with food, so you don't have to worry about taking them on an empty stomach. The only caveat is to leave at least a two-hour window between probiotics and any medications—especially NSAIDs, PPIs, and SSRIs because they disrupt digestive balance. Giving your gut flora a fighting chance means timing matters!
Q: Do you take prebiotics, too, or rely on food?
A: Yes, I do take a prebiotic supplement ("Fiberrific" by Purele), but I also focus on a balanced and additive-free diet - you'd be surprised at how many "healthy" foods contain gut flora-busting additives. For example, I recently discovered wood pulp (hiding under the name "cellulose gel") in the whipping cream I bought for my leek soup. Eeeks!
Remember to titrate your fibre intake so your gut has time to adapt, especially if you are already prone to bloating. I started with a fraction of the recommended dose and gradually increased it until I found the amount that worked best.
Finding the dynamic balance between the right supplements and a well-rounded diet is like hitting that perfect swing — or, in my case, a clean carve turn—it just feels right, and you know everything is working beautifully together.
As always, with warmth and gratitude,
Julia
