gone

Hey ,

Today marks the beginning of Satori’s two-week business Savasana.

For those of you yet to visit a yoga mat – Savasana is the best-est of all poses; it is the deep relaxation at the very end of the class.

In yoga school we were taught to say, “Savasana is when your body-mind integrates the practice,” but of course now we all know that Savasana is just a very well deserved, blissed-out nap.

For some of us (I won’t mention those names!) Savasana is the sole reason for being in the class.

Practice is tolerated.

Savasana is adored.

As you can probably sense I am quite excited about Satori’s business Savasana.
I am so looking forward to walk myself to the state of utter exhaustion and then collapse into a blissful yoga-thinking-free sleep. I am even more excited about dropping off the grid for a while.

Disconnecting.
Unplugging.
Detaching.

And that is exactly what I wanted to talk to you (very briefly!) about.

You probably have heard the now-familiar adage that “sitting is the new smoking.”

What is rarely mentioned in the fine articles about the dangers of sitting is that screen time is just as much a risk factor for disease as is the sitting.

Which means that even when we stand up, if we continue to look at a computer screen or smartphone all day, we haven’t exited the danger zone as much as we were hoping.

Screen time and sitting / lack of movement are correlated, yet separate entities that need to be approached independently.  That means that even if we’ve developed a habit of daily walking (or a yoga practice), we still need to look at the frequency with which we are using our devices and consuming information.

Wait!

Don’t throw your Smartphone into the ocean quite yet!

Here are some ideas to unplug without walking yourself into exhaustion

(unless, like me, you derive infinite joy from backpacking in the bush):

~ Practice small breaks from your phone (I routinely leave my Smartphone at home whenever I go walking or run errands)

~Pull yourself away from the screen once an hour (or more or less often – you decide) - this is a habit that is fairly easy to cultivate.

~ Feeling bored? Don’t check your FB feed just yet – stretch or drink a glass of water instead!

~ Waiting in line? Stand on one leg to work your balance or count your breaths – your e-mail is not going to run away.

~ Go to the bathroom ALONE! Leave your phone out of the loo. I mean it. Focus on how you get up and down the toilet. Breathe. Your body will love you right back!

~And, if you are  - like me – ready for a plunge – take a no-screen Savasana – and share your insights once you are plugged back in.

See you in two weeks!

Love,
