When SI - paining folks come into my office, they often say things like:
“ My hips feel totally crooked,”
or
“I feel like one side of my pelvis is way higher than the other,”
or
“My whole entire right side feels waaaaay
tighter.”
So of course, most of us come to blame the crookedness for our SI pain, and we are ALMOST right.
We have evolved to have a dominant and a non-dominant side for the sake of
efficiency. Crookedness is a sign that our body is strong in some directions, and quite weak in others.
The bad news:
PAIN SCIENCE SUGGESTS that when the nervous system perceives weakness
- especially at a joint - it makes things feel “tight,” as if to splinter the weak area.
It also sends a pain signal to stop you from moving through this area to prevent a potential + further injury.
So the area in question continuously becomes more and more deconditioned and weak, and thus the vicious cycle of repetitive pain and injury begins.
Where there is weakness, there is often a loss of body awareness, or proprioception.
Some of the most frequent comments I hear when I work with clients are:
“Whoa, I have never moved like this before.”
or
“I didn’t know this muscle existed,”
or
“I never knew my hips were so tight”
And I say: “I hear ya. Been there. Done that. That’s how I know, and this is why I can help.”
It’s not all bad news though!
The good news is that the same pathway that our body uses to send pain signals, it also uses to send proprioception – or body sense.
Increase body awareness + strength, and you will decrease signals of pain and instability.
Build strength in lots of directions, and you’ll never have to feel the cranky SI joint ever again.
This is the exact foundation for Core Restore class curriculum:
We focus - consistently and systematically - on restoring awareness and function in the hip joint and
all of the muscles surrounding it.
We isolate the movements that underlie our most common daily tasks – such as walking and sitting, for example – to build a more functional base for our daily activities.
We find strength and stability in unfamiliar places, and we do that without splintering our bodies with extra tension.
And this is exactly how we Core Restore ourselves out of SI joint pain {amongst other things}.
New set of classes starts on February 21st and registrations are open now:
