Last week has brought a number of surprising conversations about our current state of quarantine affairs.
Then a student echoed,
I have discovered that social isolating is very good for my nervous system.
Hearing comments like these reminded me of one of the pain care concepts.
In pain management, BASE LINE is the amount of daily activity we can do without ending with a flare up. That includes all activities - going to the store, washing dishes, and yes, getting on and off the yoga mat. Basically, we are trying to figure out what we can do without freaking our nervous system out.
Seems simple, right?
I guess there is a reason the saying goes "simple doesn't mean easy"...
In the past I have consistently struggled with figuring this base line thing out. You wouldn't believe how much I used to cram into each day!
I figure this habit started out of necessity after the divorce, when I was single-momming and working and building a business. Fun times!
Eventually the habit of working in constant nervous system overdrive - a.k.a. fight - flight - freeze mode - became my norm, a familiar and comfortable place to be.
I was proud of all that I could accomplish in a day; proud that I never ever cancelled a class, no matter how unwell I was; proud that I could keep it all together.
I couldn't even imagine there was a different way to live...
I kept putting more and more onto my plate until last year it all came to a crushing halt... I had a severe burnout and nervous breakdown, and couldn't get out of bed for almost 2 months.
It was so SO scary.
Yet now, almost a year to the date, I am so SO grateful for that experience.
Without it I would've never figured out neither my base line, nor the fact that it is possible for me to live without the undercurrent of chronic anxiety, persistent pain or sleeplessness...
I wonder how we will remember our current forced stay-at-home time.
A blessing or a curse...
What do you think?
New yoga classes are starting:
I've shuffled the schedule a bit to make sure folks wanting to attend both Ball & Yin and Soft & Strong Flow can do so. If you "go" to Pain Care Yoga
please let me know if you'd like to attend class twice a week as well.
All online classes are currently pay - what - you - can.
The amount is absolutely personal; please don't feel pressured to contribute beyond whatever fits into your current budget.
You'll also notice that all classes are now a full hour long. YEY!

Out of the three, Soft & Strong is the new addition.
The idea behind the name is that a healthy muscle has to be able to relax as well as contract - to be both soft AND strong. This class is built on Core Restore platform; it uses the core ball as an added instability challenge.
