Fresh spring yoga session starts on Tuesday, March 30th.
Here is the spring menu:
Pain Care Yoga
Wednesdays, 6 - 7:15 PM
It is really hard for me to write about Pain Care Yoga. Maybe it is because what you see and what you get are two very different things...
On the surface, Pain Care Yoga looks like a random variety of gentle movements, sometimes interspersed with breathing exercises.
Pretty simple, right?
Yet there's so much more under the surface... and simple or gentle doesn't mean easy.
Slowing down creates a safe environment and a foundation from which to explore.Through its gentle practices, Pain Care Yoga communicates with soft tissues and the nervous system in a powerful and positive way.
Pain Care Yoga's ultimate goal is to re-frame our relationship with the body from that of fear - be it fear of a flare-up, fear of not getting better, or fear of movement itself - to a place of understanding and empowerment. Every time we step onto our mats, we shift our attitude from "I can't" to " How can I?"
That, right there, is everyday magic.
Pain Care Yoga for the Feet
Mondays, 6 - 7:15 PM
More than just pain relief - although pain relief is definitely one of our goals - this practice literally rebuilds the stability of our foundation.
Here is how:
Our bodies have three interacting mechanisms that keep us balanced: our eyes orient us to our surroundings, the inner ear positions our heads according to gravity pull, and pressure and balance receptors in our feet connect us to the ground.
For most people, vision is the primary orienting sense. When our eyes dominate our senses, the sensory acuity of our feet fades. This erodes our foundation and makes us over-stabilize in other areas of the body (like neck and shoulders, for example).
Add to that age-related vision loss...
Waking up and strengthening the feet rebuilds our foundation, reconnects us to the ground and gifts us with better balance and stability.
Core Restore
Beginner - Thursdays, 6 - 7:15 PM
Intermediate - Tuesdays, 6 - 7:15 PM
Most folk understand the importance of core strength.
Many try a "core class" or two - and often end up with an unfortunate side effect of a flare up. Some resort to videos of "core workouts" and come out thinking " there's just no way I'll ever be able to do that..."
The hard truth is that the general fitness core workouts and classes are simply not designed for people who've been dealing with persistent pain, for folk with not-so-functional movement patterns, for those with a sensitive nervous system who are super prone to flare-ups and back-to-square-one-yet-again situations.
The load is too much.
The pacing is off.
Even the movements themselves are off: when you've lived with a dysfunctional movement patterns your entire life, it is hard to understand what functional movement feels like. These not-made-for-us classes make us doubt our ability to strengthen our core.
I fully understand the frustration of re-learning how to move... yet I also know that change is absolutely possible.
Let me say this, loud and clear: core training is for everyone!
Lately I've been describing the Core Restore class as "a blend of yoga and Pilates, sprinkled with Ball work and a generous dose of special Julia flavor."
The real truth about the Core Restore class is that it is a result of a decade of painstaking (actual pain - staking!) research, trial and error, fails, upsets, flare-ups and recoveries. Nothing on that journey came easy...
Core Restore Class is designed to meet you right where you are, to help you untangle the wicked mess of inefficient movement patterns, so you can pause, reset, regroup and keep on keeping on. One small step at a time.
