"Ouch! That hurts!
But how do I know if this here is the perpetrator - the area of actual damage - or just a victim of tension somewhere else in the body?"
Once
we begin exploring postural and movement compensation patterns it
becomes clear that often nothing is what it seems. Foot imbalance
can be the root cause of discomfort in the knee, hip, shoulder or even
jaw... Tension in the tiny muscles beneath the base of the skull can
create tightness through the whole back of the body...
We generally
accept, for example, that pain radiating down the left arm is one of the
symptoms of heart attack. Yet, when it comes to connective tissue -
muscles, ligaments, joints - we have much less understanding of common
pain referral mechanisms and the global distribution of tensile forces.
Brenda's
complaint was right hip pain, radiating down the leg and into the top of the foot. Her body reading revealed that the tension
site causing the issue was much higher - underneath her right shoulder blade. When I
palpated and pressed on that area of tension, Brenda felt pain reaching from her shoulder blade
all the way down into the right hip as well as the right foot.
Uncovering that pattern determined our further course of action, and
unwinding shoulder tension has become our number one priority.
