Good morning yogis!
Since I’m spending my summer walking, I couldn’t help but share with you a few nerdy nuggets about the many benefits of walking, especially, of course, properly aligned walking:
~ Walking is one the most beneficial movements you can do, if not the MOST beneficial one. Over the millennia of evolution, every muscle, joint and bone in our bodies have adapted beautifully to
the upright walking habit. Walking is more than exercise – it benefits our vision, nervous, digestive and cardiovascular systems; the primal need for daily walking is written in our very genes.
~ Walking (as well as a whole lot of other movements) depends on healthy feet. Unhealthy feet, as well as our sitting and standing habits all lead to a loss of smooth, symmetrical gait, which, in turn leads to a lot of structural issues with ankles (torn Achilles, anyone?), knees
(it’s bone-on-bone, you know!), hips and pelvis (pelvic floor dysfunctions, constipation or incontinence, for example) as well as upper body imbalances. Of course, most of these get chalked off to age or faulty genes…
… and the kicker:
~ Often, the most “fit” individuals – athletes, dancers, aerobics instructors, and runners – have the least healthy feet. Yup, I said it. You’ve heard
me.
