My Momma got me onto this!
Well, here is the whole story: for a couple of years now my financial adviser has been hounding me down – he, of course, wants me to INVEST more dollars. And for the same amount of time now I have been trying to communicate to him the belief that pretty much defines who I am: I believe that INVESTING IN MY HEALTH TODAY is the best guarantee for tomorrow.
Till my
Mom set this right a couple of weeks ago….
We were talking about Grandma – I remember my Grandma as vibrant, articulate, and fearless women. Mom said: “ You know, in her later years, Grandma’s blood pressure would shoot up to 200 every time she had to leave the house. And, now I’m starting to notice the same thing – whenever I have to do something unfamiliar and maybe a little bit stressful – my blood pressure jumps just as high.” I admitted that I, too, have been
prone to heart flutters and palpitations whenever I am under too much pressure (mostly self-inflicted pressure, sigh).
In a true moment of brilliance my Mom said (all in Russian, of course): “This is because of deregulation in the nervous and cardiovascular system. You need to INVEST in learning how to regulate yourself TODAY to GUARANTEE that these blood pressure spikes do not happen in your tomorrow. I wish I’ve done it when I was your
age!”
Being the nosy body nerd, I took Momma’s words to HEART and dug out some seriously mind-bending facts about blood flow turbulence, blood vessel geometry, and the role of appropriate muscle innervation in reducing BP. I’ll INVEST in a more detailed report in February – for HEART HEALTH MONTH:)
For now, though:
December is an awesome time to start thinking about your NY
goals.
What are yours?
What is your definition of a successful life?
How are you going to allocate your resources (time, effort, hard-earned $$) in 2016?
How are you going to manage your future?
Me?
Movement comes easily to me (I still see a movement teacher once a week - for someone who moves as much as I do I need my movement patterns to be near perfect to remain in the game for a loooooong time); it is the REST + RELAXATION part
of balance equation that I find challenging.
So on my 2016 WISE INVESTMENT list the are bi-weekly meetings with my psychologist who teaches me how to manage my worry-lot nature, guided deep relaxation sessions, and learning how to un-cram my schedule by saying "no." Often.
OOOOh, and maybe squeezing some restorative yoga in!
How about kicking your 2016 with a fitted - to - your - needs yoga class?
