July 12: Somatic meditation - Befriending the body


Right now, right this very moment, how aware are you of your body?



Your feet?

Legs?

Chest?

Can you feel the back of your neck?

How about your breath?



Pain changes our relationship with the body.


On one hand we become extremely hyper–aware of that place that hurts. On the other hand we get completely disembodied - the loud voice of attention-greedy pain drowns out everything else.

That’s when the fear sets in: even the slightest discomfort twinge can become a worry-trigger.
What now, – we say to ourselves – what next? Did I just hurt myself again? What do I do now?


Pretty soon we have ourselves convinced that movement isn’t safe.

The less we move, the more we hurt.

The more we hurt, the less we move.


The only way out of this vicious loop is by befriending the body.
