SPRING YOGA SESSION - week nine Friday Round Up

Published: Fri, 06/10/16

Hi

Welcome to this week's Friday Round-up - morning has just run away today (you know how that goes), so sending the follow up a little later this time.

Wow, did we ever cover a lot of ground in this session!

From healthy hip function, to calf stretching, to ball work, to balance and mind games (yes, a little bit of that, too) - and everything else in between. Now, how do we apply all of what we've learned to our off the mat life? Is that even a possibility?

You probably noticed that our movement practice has gotten progressively more complex. We are heading into the integration part of our spring session; this is where we challenge our neuro-muscular patterns so that all the little pieces we've learned over the last 9 weeks begin to gel into a single whole. Pretty exciting!

More on all that good stuff next week - along with a couple of patterns to practice on your own!

This week I want to talk a little bit about seasonal changes to our yoga practice.

Yes, you've heard me correctly -  yoga practice needs to change with the change of seasons.

Why? How?

As the seasons change and flow, so do the needs of our bodies. We crave different foods in winter than we do in summer. We wear different clothes. Our activity patterns change too. It is only appropriate that we factor the changing demands of our bodies into how we practice yoga.

As the temperatures ( and our activity levels) increase, we are going to be leaning more into the yin side of yoga things. Yin is a slower, a more contemplative and cooling practice that lands itself well to summer months and periods of increased activity. I'll talk some more about the merits and differences of yin practice during classes. Here is some more yin-formation, and attached is a lovely yin pose to practice.

Enjoy your butterfly!

Cheers,

Julia
